Binary distillation, a fundamental separation process, involves the purification of a liquid or vapor mixture containing two substances by applying and removing heat simultaneously. This method has a rich historical background, initially finding prominence in the production of alcoholic beverages through batch distillation. However, significant advancements in distillation techniques emerged in the 16th century when it was realized that the efficiency of separation could be enhanced through multiple vapor-liquid contacting or stages.

The pivotal shift towards optimizing separation processes led to the widespread adoption of multiple-stage distillation as the primary industrial method for separating liquid mixtures in the 20th century. This evolution in distillation technology, as elucidated by Lone and Rather (2015), marked a transformative era in chemical engineering and industrial applications. Multiple-stage distillation techniques, characterized by their efficiency and precision, became integral to the separation and purification of diverse chemical compounds in various industrial sectors.

This abstract delves into the historical roots of binary distillation, highlighting its evolution from a traditional practice in alcoholic beverage production to a sophisticated and widely employed industrial methodology. The significance of multiple vapor-liquid contacting or stages, as conceptualized in the 16th century, set the stage for the dominance of multiple-stage distillation in the 20th century. Through a comprehensive exploration of the evolution and applications of binary distillation, this study aims to provide insights into the historical progression and contemporary relevance of this essential separation process.
